#1: Castle of Vianden
Restored : originally built between the 11-14th Centuries
Vianden Castle located at a postcard perfect village of the same name (Vianden), is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful castles of Luxembourg, with over 250,000 visitors every year!. This magnificent castle construction was started by the Romans in the 3rd century (AD) and built further between the 11th and 14th Century.

It’s a short walk from the basement parking, yet we decided to go with the “chairlift” for its glorious views!. The Vianden chairlift takes you up 440 metres over a steep river valley, on a spectacular expanse above beautiful river, trees and clouds. As you approach the top, the Vianden Castle slowly, elegantly presents itself. The views are absolutely worth!

#2. Bourscheid Castle
Restored : originally built in year 1000AD
Bourscheid castle is yet another popular attraction, located on a beautiful steep hill, surrounded by river Sûre. The Bourscheid Castle was built around year 1000AD, originally as wooden fort, and later transformed into stone, with an influence of Romanesque architecture. With 11 massive watch-towers and interesting history of Romans, Merovingian, Carolingian and Ottonian rule here, Bourscheid castle is worth your visit.

#3.Beaufort Castle
Ruins: built in 12th century
Beaufort Castle is in the Mullerthal region (often referred as the Luxembourg’s little Switzerland”, very close to the Mullerthal Trail one of the best hiking destinations in the western Europe. When you’re driving to Mullerthal trail, this castle is hard to miss.

The castle has two blocks: first part -the Renaissance castle of Beaufort dates from the 16th centrury and never suffered any major damage; but the other part was from the 13th century and almost ruined during the many wars it has went through.
Liqueur of the castle Beaufort is very popular, which offers delicious favours such as Cassero (liqueur made out of blackcurrents), Cassero-Kirsch (Cherry brandy), Framboise des Bois (liqueur of woodraspberries).

#4. Clervaux Castle
Restored : originally built in 12th century
This majestic castle building - Montée du Château is located in a gorgeous hilly village of Clervaux. But only the exterior of it looks as a castle, the interior is fully transformed into modern and house three museums - Museum of the Battle of the Bulge, Museum of Luxembourg Castle replicas and importantly, The Family of Man.

Museum of the Battle of the Bulge, Museum of Models of Luxembourg Castles are not open all day (do check the website before your visit) . We could visit only the The Family of Man – the World famous exhibition of images and World heritage UNESCO and message for freedom and humanity.

#5. Grand-Ducal Palace
This is not really a castle, yet I included in the list since it’s situated well in the Luxembourg city centre, easily accessible and it is the official house of the Duke of Luxembourg .

This 16th century building is a grandiose of Flemish Renaissance and one of the main attractions of Luxembourg. You can’t miss this when you go to Luxembourg city. But you must note: since the Duke and his family lives here, it’s open for visitors only during the summer months (mid-July till end of August every year).
