January 15, 2020

So, you are looking into booking a cruise and want to find out whether it’s worth taking your passport? You have so many things to pack and think about, you’d rather double check before heading out. With international flights, it’s pretty obvious but when it comes to sailing the seas, you may be wondering what to do. Well, this article will discuss all you need to know and give you great tips if you are heading anywhere across the world or in one of those cruises from Singapore.

BOTTOM LINE - DO YOU NEED A PASSPORT TO GO TO FOREIGN PORTS?

Yes, you still do. If you are from the U.S, for example, and you are heading to Canada, you will be required to show a passport upon arrival if you want to explore. You will also need a passport for different excursions once you reach the shores.

So whether you have a smaller day trip planned on the Caribbean Islands or want to take a famous train along Alaska’s beautiful land, you’ll need to bring along that all-important document if you want to make the most of your trip and see everything you came to see.

PASSPORT: CHECK, VISA: CHECK

It’s also a good idea to check whether certain ports also have visa requirements as this may differ too from country to country depending on rules and regulations.

PASSPORT FREE LOCATIONS

We say bring your passport, just in case. However, there are some passport-free destinations such as Puerto Rico in the U.S where Americans can travel without having to show a passport. They can also visit the surrounding islands without any issue too as they are all part of the commonwealth.

SOME CRUISES DO NOT REQUIRE A PASSPORT

There are some cruises where you do not need a passport and these are known as closed-loop where they begin and end in the U.S port and only sail to places such as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

So, it’s a good idea to double check with your specific cruise line as some will require a passport and some won’t. Hence, what we’re saying is that if you are ever uncertain, always bring your passport with you. Don’t let your trip be ruined just because you forgot your passport. It’s just not worth it.

CRUISES THAT DO NEED A PASSPORT

There are also those cruises that start in one port and end in another. If this is the case with your chosen cruise tour and it is ending in a different country or destination then you will be required to hold a valid passport.

As you can see, there are a few different rules depending on where you are going and which type of cruise you are on so it’s always best to double check with your line and bring your passport just in case.
